SINGER FEATHERWEIGHT

SOLD

This is a classic Singer Featherweight 221-1 Sewing Machine, with carrying case and many extras. Its serial number, AK746682, gives it an allotment date of 20 February 1952 at Elizabethport, NJ. This beauty has had only one owner.

The machine was serviced and adjusted in June of 1996, but never used again as the owner became ill a short time later. The test fabric is still in the machine; I tried it at several different stitch sizes and it runs very smoothly both forward and in reverse and sews a fine stitch. The light is present and the bulb works.

The gold work is in excellent condition and all present. The black paint overall has been partially cleaned of a coat of oil and grime to reveal a bright finish. The belt is somewhat worn, but wasn't found to need replacing when the machine was serviced. Considering its age and use, the machine is in excellent condition with the usual pin marks on the sewing surface. There are two dings on the wheel, not really noticeable except by touch, and another ding in the rim of the light shade. Both are still black in these areas and seem to be made of Bakelite.

The case is the black one commonly seen, with the floral embossed black lining. The bakelite foot pedal fits into a slot in the lid, with cord and plugs in perfect condition. Though the envelope marked "keys" is present, alas, there are no keys to be found. The lube tube box is present though, with the lubricant, and was in the box with the sewing supplies. The case has no odor of mold or mildew, no tears or rips and very little wear on the corners. Both latches work and the metal is clean. This case has a bakelite handle.

Accessories include: the bobbin case with bobbin and thread (apparent, since we tested it!), Singer buttonholer (160506) in a plastic case with four templates in the case and another four templates in their own separate box (sizes are 3/8", 1/2", 1 1/16", 5/8", 13/16", 5/16" straight templates; 5/8",  1 1/16" keyhole templates); the buttonholer manual; original Singer 221 manual. In the sewing basket were an assortment of needles, both hand and machine and an assortment of thread, most cotton on wooden spools, several silk, and two new polyester spools; an old cloth tape measure; two pin cushions, one old, one new; a vintage thimble; small thread trimming scissors; a seam ripper; a pattern tracing wheel; nine extra bobbins and a large black screwdriver (couldn't find a mfg. mark). The basket itself isn't included.

The attachments are:

There is also a red felt circle for the spool pin (under the spool of thread on the machine in the photos). The front plate is the striated type, clean and shiny. All in all, this is a fine machine that would be perfect for a quilter or for a collector (or for making doll's clothes, or children's clothes, or..........).
